This wasn't the tutorial I was thinking of at first, but I went over it really quickly, it's a pretty good tutorial. (It's a movie so you can see how it works)

It's a .rar file...so you need a program like WinRar to unzip it. It's pretty much like a .zip file, except different compression. So download WinRar to access what's inside that. And to view the movie, download Quicktime Player

Couldn't you just use the magic wand to select the background then select inverse as a new layer? I fiddled with it and got fairly good results using tolerances for the wand from 20 to 50.

I would use a quick mask it will work best for the hair, if you want to get picky use the pen tool for the rest of the image and combine the masks. If you do use a mask get smart and use the lasso tool to fill in the majority of what you want to mask and then press Q and fill in/erase with B&W.
