content on the layer is not directly editable

I am trying to create an object on a new layer and fill it using the paint bucket tool and am getting the following message:

Could not use the paint bucket because the content of the layer is not directly editable.

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

Make sure the object isn't in Shape Layer mode or Path mode. You'd have to set it on Fill Pixels mode in order for you to just make a shape and then edit it. You can change these settings in the Fill Options bar (on the top, usually). The left-most group of three buttons are the ones you're looking for.
