if you're talking about the same thing then just draw little crop marks where the print will be cut (example 8.5"x11") then make the actual artwork a quarter inch larger on all sides (example of the artboard 9"x11.5"). then go to file, save as, and choose pdf for the format and use the zip compression.

Bleeding is running your ink to the edge of a page. Traditionally, all a printer requires is an 1/8th of an inch, not a quarter of an inch for cropping purposes. It would be much cheaper to print if you reduce your artwork instead of increasing it. That is because you can imposition more copies of the work when they are confined to an 8.5 x 11 piece of paper or multiples of that. If it is a one off job, meaning you are getting one printed at Staples or somewhere, then it will still be cheaper to go smaller. The size Krane suggested would be printed on 11 x 17 and there would be tons of paper to hack off. Defining your bleeds depends on how you are creating your PDF. I assume you are just doing a save as, so what I would do is put some guides down and make small crop marks 1/8 into your picture, that way you have some markings to show you where to cut. If you are making a postscript file and running it through Distiller, there is an auto feature that lets you input your own bleeds. You'll want to set that to .125". |
