Hi, just wanted to know how I can change a regular layer (black and white) into a mask for another layer without having to use the selection tool. It's a complex shape and I don't want to lose any quality. I've never had to do it this way before so I havn't a clue what to do.

Are the black and gray pixels you're referring to on their own layer? If so, simply Command/CTRL-Click on their layer in the Layers Palette and you will be selecting everything on that layer. Then, if you want to use those pixels as a mask, you can switch to your Channels Palette and save the selection as a new alpha channel by clicking on the icon, second from the left, at the bottom of the Channels Palette. Doing this will save that selection, which you may activate at anytime by clicking/dragging that Channel to the left-most icon at the bottom of the Channels Palette. |
