How do i draw curves in Photoshop 5.0?

Im serious...i know its an easy to answer question but cant i use the pen tool to create curves..when i try to i dont know how to put the curves on the page..they stay as the funny bars with the squares on the ends...eek..how do i mkae curves without a paintbrush!!!

When you've got those funny bars with the squares on it  just go to edit>stroke and stroke the path. Also you can make a selection out of the path and do al kinds of crazy stuff with it

Im not completely sure what you mean..can someone explain how to do curves better......plz? what tool do i use and what buttons do i hit to shape it and enter it into the picture?
