Hey Gang, I'm interested in some clarification of something I heard while watching a video tutorial. I'm not sure what he artist meant. He'd opened an image - duplicated it into another layer - as I recall set layer blending to color dodge - and then was using the Art History Brush set at a very low opacity to paint on Layer 2. After doing that for a while though he merged Layer 2 back down with Layer 1 and then explained how this would allow us to bring out the blue sky which we couldn't really get to while we were in the form of two different layers. And sure enough - he was right. Just by merging the layers we were able to expose the sky with the art history tool. While the two layers remained seperated the sky area in the image just kinda stayed white. Then he said.. Everytime we add a layer we're adding 10%, 10%, 10%, etc.. Anyway - I didn't quite understand that. I'm thinking there is some concept here though that I need to be aware of. It just kinda 'feels' like one of those kinda things ya need to know to fly this thing. So, I was wondering - does that mean anything to anybody here? Adding 10%? I may be taking the guy out of context. Maybe it's one of those things where ya need to actually see the tutorial for me to be able to explain it. Or maybe I just misunderstood him. But I have a feeling there is something in here somewhere I need to know. Thanks - and cheers! |

I think that means that he had a layer that was 10 % opacity. If you duplicate that layer then you get two 10% opacity layers, one on top of the other, and it appears more opaque than before. Duplicate the layer again and now you have 3 layers, each with 10% opacity, and it appears even more opaque than with 2. I think this is the idea he's trying to say. with every layer you're adding 10% opacity... though may I add, 10 layers will not be completely opaque. Theoretically you will never make it completely opaque unless one of the layers is at 100%. you could probably get close, though, by this duplicating of layers.

Ahhhhh.... Thanks. Yes - now that makes sense. We/he did have the layer opacity set to 10% as I recall. I think I can see then how staking one on top of another would create that effect. "Merging Down" two layers into one then would 'thin' that (for lack of a better word) - making it easier to paint through to the layer resting beneath the two I'm talking about here. Or at least I think that makes sense. Thanks again. And cheers! Jatava |

Hey ya, X .. The first videos I looked at were the ones at Lynda.com. Those were't specifically about CS. I don't think they have a CS tutorial out yet. But the Photoshop 7 classes worked just fine for me as I'm new to the program, and true to form Lynda.com put out a good product on this one - IMHO. Have to love that price too. $25 bucks per mo. gets ya access to everything there except their download example files. But honestly, I haven't run across a tutorial there yet where I needed "their example file." In fact, it's been kinda fun and good to come up with my own. The one that I'm working on now though is a little diddy I picked up on eBay though. It's from a company I never heard of before called eVideoXpress. Here Is Their eBay Link Note - that link I believe will take you to a video tutorial with a description of PS 7 but the one I bought was entitled Photoshop CS. Also, I think I paid (again) like 25 bucks for it and again, IMHO it was well worth the price if for not other reason than just the fun of it. This one contains 30 lil projects. Here are the one's I've done so far - sometimes starting with one of their images and sometimes one of my own. http://spider-food.net/photoshop/happycouple.htm Oh - and it also comes with tons of brushes, and actions, and stuff like that. Hope that helps. Also, if anyone knows somewhere else to get similar QuickTime things for Photoshop, please lemme know too. I've wathed all the ones they have over at Lynda.com now and I'm almost finished with this project type one. Cheers! |

Oh cool, Man. Thumbs up! I was thinking though and maybe somebody has some info on this. It just seems kinda odd. I also found a link for a PS download graphic that seems to have to do with the same content as the fella who created this video. That other link was here. http://www.scottkelbybooks.com/ddcsphotos.html Top left photo here is the same one in the eVideoXpress package. Not sure how these are conneted if at all - but it made me go hmmmm.. Cheers! |
