silly question, simple answer?

since i installed photoshop 7 there is a little box grey box of the top left hand corner of all the images i open. the box has 01 in it and a box next to it that looks a little like a graph.

i have never encountered this before in earlier versions and i'm concerned that i'm doing something probably really simple wrong. any feedback greatly appreciated.

I think you see the symbol for slices.
Go to view -> show -> slices... turn that off and everything should be fine.
