Outlining and object

I am new to the whole photoshop thing and I was wondering how to smoothly go around and object example a car? Which tools do I use and all.

Any help I would appreciate.

as in make an outline around it?

In that case I'd;

CTRL+Click the layer it's on to make a selection of it,
make a new layer underneath it,
expand the selection with a certain amount of pixels,
and fill with the colour you want.
....or just use stroke (outside, *px)

oh, outlining = selecting?

In that case, as you aparently discovered, use the pentool and make a selection. :D
