Any tips for me if I want to start making art like this guy: http://www.misprintedtype.com/ or this guy: http://www.ths.nu/ or this magazine: http://www.adbusters.org/ ? - Do they use digital cameras? - Scanners? - Wacoms? - Mice? - Other small rodents? - Magazines? - Newspapers? - Aluminum can labels? - Christmas wrapping paper? - Fonts? - Grunge brushes? - Premade patterns? I think I'm random enough and spontaneous enough and have enough taste, I just dont know how they physically put it together. tom |

This might be obvious to you, I dont know : 1)Get a blank book 2) Carry it with you wherever you go 3) When you see something you like put it in the book i.e Newspaper articles, magazine clippings, raffle tickets (?!?!?!) 4) Scan them all in and arrange them as you want them 5) Make a mess - (dont worry it will look good ) Also, Have a look on the google images section and youll find plenty and plenty of random pictures, like wrestling midgets and stuff. Take your own pictures aswell, take them of things you hardly ever see happening like people sleeping on benches..... Write some things down and scan them in.... i see that many people scan stuff from science text books Get some classic fonts - those always look good Get a nice set of grunge brushes : http://brushes.drabqueen.com/ - Thats my personal favourite Have fun Marc (hope that helped by the way) oooh most important of all mess about with the transform modes on photoshop edit>transform>Skew or Perspective etc.... |

probably just do scans of everything they can get their hands on and they piece stuff together and tare it up in photoshop. just have to start thinking about how everything can be a different illustration technique and begin experimenting.

Not really. I'm kinda worried about copyright, though. You can't just scan in pictures from magazines and then call them your own. I don't even use google image search anymore because most of the images are copyright. http://www.sxc.hu is my main source of photos for digital art because I'm sure they're not copyright or anything. But magazines and box covers and everything ... ehhh? What are the rules pertaining to this kind of stuff? tom |

Off topic, but sad they got screwed over by SpamCop. Hopefully they get straightened out soon. I visit their site every now and then. |

yeah, i found that out yesterday (the spamcop/sxc thing) when i was trying to use them, SOOO frustrating. those guys rock. i think the key to this kinda stuff (as its sort've a similar style to a lot of stuff i do) is to not force anything, just kinda flow. if you try to overdesign it it comes out looking forced and unnatural, in order for this kinda thing to work it has to be organic and natural. get a collection of imarges, scanned bits of stuff, type, etc. in photoshop and start playing and see what you can create. start with one image or theme or idea you want to convey or focus on and then consider what you can do to reinforce that theme and let everything else support it. and have fun chris |

Yeah. Start smoking crack. Seriously, that site is just abunch of random stuff thrown together. I'm sure there's an art to it, since it looks pretty good, and i'm sure that this person has been throwing crap for years now to reach this level. but that's all it is, and it just takes time and experimentation. |

But about copyright - I guess cutting a picture of a baby or a monkey out of a magazine and scanning it and posting it on your website isn't going to get you jailed. Or is it? ;) tom |
