How do I make a stroke pattern that will give me a dotted stroke?

I don't know if this is what you are looking for but try this:

First create the pattern (New file > 3x3 > using the pencil tool, make a dot in the middle of the file and define pattern). Then on your selection, go to Edit > Stroke and then do a stroke. After that go to blending options > pattern overlay and then select the dotted pattern and that will work. That's just how I'd do it, a little complicated but it'll work.

If you are using PS 7, there is a tab for "brushes" in the upper right corner. Click on that - drop down - click on "Brush Tip Shape" and on the bottom is a slider that sets "spacing" .... Voila.

I think I would choose the brush spacing option too, however another more fiddly and bizzare way I have just thought of it to make a pattern and use a 1px marquee. Should work. I would still go with the spacing option though ;)

And if you want the (non round) dots to follow the direction of the path, http://www.planetphotoshop.com/PeteBauer74.html
