Text as Selection

Is there a way to make your text a selection? That way you could give it a border but delete the inner part.

Click the text button and hold down on it. You should see a flyout menu with text selection tools.

Edit: Well, depending on your version of PS. I think v6, when you click the text tool you'll see the options to change at the top in the Options bar.

Well, take the text layer and rasterize it (right click on layer, choose rasterize layer). Then ctrl-click the layer. Voila. Selection shaped like text.

Then you can make a new layer (with selection active), and do edit >>> stroke.

If you've got v7 you can add a Stroke Layer style and set the fill on your layers tab to 0%. That way your text is still 100% editable.
