The best way I can think of is to use the pen tool and create a path and then make the path a selection. The whole inside is basicly straight angles and no curves. Or, mayber when you open up the image, goto Image>Mode>RGB Color. Then, take the magic eraser tool and erase the white bg around the shape. Then, that will put the shape on a layer. Then, Ctrl+Click on the layer and iverse the selection. Does that work? One more way I can think of is draw a small line with the pencil tool and connect the two top points together. Then, use the magic wand tool and select the inner part. I hope one of these ideas work for you. Good Luck!

Those lines all seem to be pretty straight, so I'd use a nice zoom and the polygonal lasso tool.

Use the colour range command and choose highlights only.

problem with color range, you would get jaggies.. the best idea is MJ's. No pixelation. Though what I would do is to select the white space inside one half of it and then copy, paste, flip it over, and put it to the side of it to make sure the two sides are symmetrical.
