Hey all,
Here's my dillemma:

A photo I took in DC:

And I converted most of it to grayscale while keeping the right color of the door.

How can I truly make it two colors for the grayscale and one color of red for the door (don't forget the window panes!!!).

The final thing has to be three colors only. I wanted it to be the grayscale and then the red door.

EDIT: PLEASE do not post images directly into the forums, it really makes things messed up... and makes everything load slower for our 56k users. Please use links instead. Thanks :D

why dont u highlight the door w/o the panes?

and these images should be linked, therefore they dont break up the layout of the forums. (scrolling sideways etc.)

I believe you need to use channels with spot colours. Make one channel your greyscale channel, then choose a red spot colour for the door.

What is you're third colour going to be? And is this going to print and has to only be 2 colours, or is it a school assignment?

I might be a little unsure as to what you're looking for, but I have 3 samples that might appeal to you. Take a look at this "door" project and let me know if they work.

You can view them here:

Dull Red Door:

Original Red Door:

Golden Door:

Hope this helps a bit...

You can select the door and then i believe hold alt and do another selection, and it "subtracts" from the original selection (the lasso tool will have a - next to it). So he just "subtract-selected" the banister from the selection and wham, only the door is selected. Then he might have done ctrl+shift+I (invert selection) and that selects the rest of the pic, then go image>adjustments>desaturate and i think that should make the pic except for the door black and white.

Hey man...supahseksy is pretty much on the money. I'm still somwhat new at Photoshop and I might've taken a longer way than what supah explained, but this is what I did.

- Quik masked the door
- Then took the brush tool to get it squared out
- Then took the eraser and erased over the iron bars on the door
(keep in mind that the "shift" key is your friend when working around something real quick and using straight lines).

- Then I busted a desaturate and with the door still selected, I went into hue/saturation to fix and change the color of the door. When you use hue/saturation to change a color, be sure to check the "colorize" box in the lower right hand corner.

So there it is. I had a good time doing it and luckily some spare time and a good way to keep improving my skillz. ;)

Take care and if I can be of assistance in the future, feel free to give me a hollar.

Cheers!!!
