Film grain on my scans (using tri-x 400s) makes it look like monochromatic gaussian noise. I guess you can try using noise-removing techniques (which I can't come up with, maybe a blur will do) to get rid of them.

Any chance you could post a piccie of the problem? It is difficult to diagnose without a squizz at the affected area. You might want to do a bit of research into ISO Noise Removal. There are some plugins available or you could just as easily do it manually. Is it raw data that you are working with or are you scanning etc? |

If it is similar to digital noise, you could try NeatImage. I have read about it in other 'digital pro' type forums and it is mentioned as the best in Noise Removal. |

its for scanned in photos. the scanner tends to amplify the grain. i dont really have a specific example, its a constant problem. are there scanner setting that would minimize this?

Nope, the scanner picks up what it sees. If the grain's on the print it'll show up as such. Can't repair something that's not broken. Example of a scan: sunflower.jpg 600kb 1986x1956 |

this is an action for photoshop that i stumbled upon. it works. it may not as work as well as the plugins you have to pay for but it shows a noticeable difference plus it's freeeee. i just tried it and it rocks. i was looking for something like this myself and i ran across this thread. i looked a little further and i landed on freebie paydirt. http://www.nickgallery.com/web_pages/technical%2011.htm |

If you are scanning it, scan it with at least double the intended output. Here's the important bit though - you should be able to decrease the noise by rotating the scan through 45degrees increments, then combining the individual scans
