Check out the beautiful thing at:
http://www.toplt.com/deterioration_1024.jpg

If you look carefully, there are different patterns all over this graphic. And on the bottom, there are the cubes, and they sort of dissapear towards the left of the image. Is this done using the selection tool to select exactly where the patterns would go? Or a hidden technique or something?...

It looks like a simple grid pattern.

You can make one yourself, just follow some scanline tutorial... except instead of a line make a little "+".

Hey thanks for the tip, although I really wanted to know how they fade the pattern.

Well,

I can think of some ways:

One way is to take the eraser tool on a really weak setting with a really huge brush. And start erasing little by little from the side where it's most faded.

Another way to chop up the pattern layer using (Ctrl-Alt-J), which is I believe also called "New Layer Via Cut" under the "Layers" menu... then just set the opacity of each separate layer to your liking. Just don't move the layers.

Also lets not forget the lasso and feathering for fades. ~.~

Chances are that they used moo's thang.

First, they have the whole pattern on the whole wallpaper. then they take any selection tool. for instance the lasso, or the polygonal, it doesn't really matter because the end product will not be sharp either way. They could have used the rectangular too. any would work.

then they just go select>feather and feather it big , like 40 or 50 px lol because it's a large selection, and then delete, and it's faded.

Either that or they could have four layers, with the different patterns, and use layer masks to hide some patterns in some places. Then gaussian blur the mask to make the transistion more gradual.
