in the text tutorial - the blue gel one - i cant do number two - i dunno how to do the select/modify/contract part

In photoshop got to Select, choose modify, choose contract.

I don't think I'm understanding your questions, please be more specific on what exactly you can't do.

I had similar problem before until today I still could not follow the metal text tutorial in teamphotoshop. I did everything rigtht but the text did not come out right I suggest make it simpler and I loved all the animated tutorials.

the bit where it says 'Now Ctrl+Click on your text layer to select it, and make a new layer above it'

Oh that? it's easy dude, Ctrl+Click to select your layer then make a new layer with the selection on. make sure you are on the new layer. go to select >> modify >> contract, and make how many pixel you want. and Do Alt + Delete to fill the contracted area

yeah i can do that, but when i make the new layer and go to select/modify/contract, u can't get to modify its grey (no what i mean)

No It would be better if you can upload the picture but I'll see what I can do ..........

You probably already deselected it. The modify is modifying the selection, but if theres no selection, then its grey. You have to CTRL-Click the text layer thumbnail, then click New layer, then modify>contract the selection.
