Uncropping An Image

Hey!

While attempting to open some of my old pics, I noticed that many of them, which have ben cropped and altered, have remained in their original state in the preview window of the "open" dialog. Does that mean I can un-crop and un-alter them? How do I do it? And if I can't, why is this feature there to begin with?

If the opened file itself is cropped and altered there is no way to undo that since Photoshop clears History information when you close it. The preview thumbnail probably still shows the old thumbnail because it might've messed up while saving it before.
