I'm wanting to create transparent text over a picture with only the outline of the text showing. So basically, I need to only see the stroke of the text and have be picture show thru from behind. does that make sense?

lol yes it makes sence I just gave it a try.. there's a couple things you could try #1 make your text, rastorize it.. then select the magic wand and select in the screen then click select inverse make a new layer and stroke, then delete the original text layer (this might have problems with letters like ,e,a,p,R, etc...) #2 you could use black text set the blend mode to color dodge and then use the layer effect stroke. |

I have an easier way for you. Write the text you need. Then hold the Ctrl key down and click on your text layer. Hit the backspace key to delete the text. Then, go to Edit>Stroke and stroke it. If your talking about text that is already on the image that you didn't type then use zyconium's method.

ok...I've tried both Marbles advice and Supers advice. They both get me to the same place...I get to the point where I have an outline of my text (mask) but I can't apply a stroke. What the heck am I doing wrong?

Well, go to Edit and then select stroke. Choose either center or Outside. Choose the color you want and press OK. If that doesnt work then add a layer style. Oh, if you use the tool that marble suggested then make sure it is on a seperate layer. That is, if you use the layer style Stroke. I hope that helps somehow.
