Getting rid of white around letters with a transparent image

For a gif or png file, is there anyway I can get rid of the white outlines they get around them when I display them on web pages? It's driving me nutz, I can't figure out how to get rid of the white!!!!!!!!!!

Make sure there aren't any translucent pixels. All of them have to be opaque when saving else that pixel is saved with a white bg. GIFs can't support translucency that's why.
