Linked text I guess

Hi,
I want to know if this kind of text is possible to create using Photo shop. I am very very new to this area. I was just checking this site and some cool text created using GIMP

My guess is yes you can.. but would like to know how and is there a name for this kind of text

Looks like text is created using lots of beveling, and some gradients to fill.

Now the wrap around effect can be created by using layers. ie. cut out the section you want in back and put it behind the text. SO you would have one layer of the main text, then one layer below and one above with the other text so you can create that wrap effect.

may be another way, but offhand that is what I would do.

I have read through various tutorials which use layer masks to acheive this effect but I have not yet experimented with this. Frankly, I don't even know what a layer mask is so if someone would like to direct me to a quality tutorial/lesson about layer maks and their use, I would greatly appreciate it.
