Is it possible to have a background texture (or any part of an image, for that matter) fade from an opacity of 100 to 0 over a specified range? If so, how do you make that happen? I'm working with Photoshop 5.5. Thanks.

If you want to fade a texture/picture (not just a solid color) select the layer you want.....go to the layers menu > add layer mask > reveal all. Now go into your layers palette and click the second thumbnail (the one on the right..this is you layer mask thumbnail..the first one is the layer thumbnail) and draw a gradient (gradient tool) or fill with a gradient (edit menu). Be sure to have a black and white gradient (black will be o% opacity..white will be 100%) You'll have to play with it a bit to get the effect you want but thats the basics of it.
