Question. I love the artwork over at http://www.shadowness.com/. How does he/she do the digital girl pics? i see alot of color dodging and such...the images are just so busy i have trouble taking them apart and seeing the layers. i'm not looking for someone to hold my hand down the wlkway on this....just need a direction to go in or start from. If you want to post a tutorial or such that has relevance to the images that would be great as well. I thank you for your help in advance. ronin1010 |

the splash page is an example of one. here is another example of more. http://www.shadowness.com/wallpapers.php?&shadowness Eevo, ghostshell, ensnare are all examples of what i'm trying to achieve. i see evidence of color dodging, layer modes out the wazoo, paths, etc.... I know there's max or maya stuff in there to. the skin colors are always interesting, i'll assume those are doen with adjustment layers or layer modes and then dodged. My biggest problem is where does someone start with something like this? ronin1010 |

Well im no pro...but here is how i would go about it. First..you need a photo or a drawing. Use this to create an outline. Then i would go into quick mask..paint around it and probably save it as a channel (although you could mask the layer if you want). Then I would get a medium sized soft brush and start painting in the shadows (back of the legs...arms..back you got the idea). I would probably spend a while painting it by hand and building up the tone from a low opacity. Then hand paint the highlights. (through out this process i would probably use the channel i saved to get a nice crisp edge to start with). Next...either use paths or go into illustrator (eevo use illustrator) and draw lines..plastic parts..armor.. wires...whatever electronic/digital/plastic thingy you want. Also draw the outline of the body. I would then start playing with the things you just drawn and layer modes/layer styles. Copy elements...use diff opacities...experiment with it. Then i would select the saved channel...invert the selection and paint the background with a soft brush. Then to finish it i would use the blur tool (and the smudge tool) to redefine the edges and blend the crisp edges (from using the saved channel) with the background. To get that clear plastic / hollow look to it...i would redefine/paint more highlights. Paint some hard edged highlights (use a marquee). If your painting hair...use a small sharp brush and build up the strands. Then just keep working and building it up. (my ideas are based off eevos art work...mostly the image on the first page of wallpapers) It may help you to check you http://www.gfxartist.com/features/tutorials Most of this looks painted/drawn. Doesnt look like too much 3d or photographs. |
