I am new to photoshop and would appreciate any help anyone can give me with my problem.

I really like the effect in this poster can someone please tell me how I can do this in P/S. I see this effect all the time taking one color and making it light and dark in different areas. Like the banner on this site, but can never do it myself.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you

Your talking about the blue color right??? Basically just use "color dodge" in the layers palette. Have the image you want on 1 layer....then make a new layer...put whatever you want on it and set it to "color dodge".

Btw......that movie is awesome. havent seen the original though....

You can also select the area where you want to change the color, press ctrl-u and adjust the settings to make the desired color.

Also to make the background look good you'll probably want a white gridlines pattern. If you look closely there are a lot of little white squares. You can find a tutorial on "grid lines" or "scan lines" somewhere on the net for that.

As to the white flares on the left side on the blue background - I'm not really sure.

First, thank you all for the help, but I still don’t get it (I say I was a newbe). I tried to do the dodge thing but it didn’t work. I also would like to do the effect that is on the blue part of the picture (you know the light blue dark blue thing. If there is a tutorial that demonstrates this and anyone knows the link to it would be appreciated.

"I also would like to do the effect that is on the blue part of the picture"

So wait.....your original question was about the right side (brown/yellow side.......we're running out of colors here lol)??

If so:

The right side is one color.....its that orange/lightbrown color in the background. Above it (on a diff. layer) is just a yellow outline of the pictures. The outline is either painted with a large soft brush....or with the lasso tool the outline of those pictures is traced...feathered (in the selection menu..it fades your selection like a soft brush) and then the selection is filled with a yellow color (edit > Fill or alt-backspace).

If thats not what your looking for than i have no idea lol. You may need to be more specific...as to what area of the pic your need help on.

My best guess is to make a dark blue rectangle and on top of that a smaller light blue rectangle and on top of that a smaller white rectangle. Then use the smudge tool starting from the white rectangle and painting upwards. Here's a quick attempt...

Hey, I just want to thank you for trying to help this newbe to get this thing right.

Rodder454, you may be right I probably need to be a little more clear about what I’m trying to do.

I want to do both sides of the poster, the blue side and the orange/gold, brown side. I see the effect like the one on the blue side all the time on movie poster and would love a tutorial to show me step by step how to do that. Really if anyone could post a link to either effect I once again would deeply appreciate it.

Once again thank you for trying to help this newbe.
