Strange Instructions

Hello,

Currently I'm trying to complete this tutorial to learn new techniques etc..

I am stuck at step 7. Step 7's instructions make Step 9's instructions impossible to me.

Step 7 states:
Create a new layer, hold down alt, and merge visible. This will be our rendering channel. Select all, copy, create a new channel, and paste.

Step 9 states:
Now we'll delete the extra material. Ctrl-click the original circle layer, invert the selection, and hit Backspace.


My problem in step 7, if I create a new layer then hold down alt, I cannot merge visible because the 'alt' disables the menu(s)

My problem in step 9, if I 'merged visible' in step 7, how can I 'Ctrl-click' the original layer? The original layer is gone via 'merged visible'.

Perhaps I'm interpreting the instructions incorrectly, can anyone help me to better understand this?

i admit thats not the easiest tut to read.
i'm kinda confused too...
have you looked for another one??
