Great Effect.... but how?

Im no newbie but i just cant get this one effect:

I would suggest playing with a lot of blurring and distort filters, then mixing different blending modes together to get the bright colors. I don't know of any tutorials on that. But you could try searching for some on www.google.com. It's not easy, but I think that's the basics of it. Also blending with a lot of pictures and 3D renderings.

Deker hit the nail. Distort and blur filters, blend modes, and layer masks and effects. Looks like fun.

you also might consider what he started with...it might have already been a motion blurred lights type photo...who knows

Pretty easy, combine that with some dodging and blending and you have it.

One of the filters in KPT 5 is called FraxFlame. It generates awesome effects much like the one you're asking about. You'll have to mess with the colors and some other aspects of the filter to get the right effect, but trust me, it's pretty cool. You might want to try using Polar Coordinates and Wind to make it seem to explode outward.
