Question About One of the Text effect tuts

In the tutorial about rough metalic text, it says in the first step to go to layer/type/render layer but you cant chose that.How do you select it?

did they perhaps mean Layer->Rasterize->Type? That will make the text a raster graphic (so you can paint & such with it, but it no longer acts like text, so no fixing spelling). I don't know what the tutorial is trying to get at exactly, but there is definitely no Layer->type->render.
