Easy way to blend layer modes

Is there a way we can get like gradients of one layer mode to another. Or from normal to "overlay in a gradient fashion?"

This might be a solution if I understand the question correctly: Try duplicating the bottom layer and applying a normal gradient. On the second bottom layer apply the gradient in overlay mode. Merge into two seperate layers and use a layer mask to blend one into the other.
