How To Create Volumetric Light???

Hmmmmmm...I was wondering if there was any possible way to create volumetric light in photoshop without using 3rd party plug ins.

The effect i'm after is an exploding light kind of thing coming from an object in multiple directions...if you don't quite understand i'll post a picture of the effect.

Try a mask layer, useing a radial gadiant, that will give you some adjustment and you can add pops and dust to it to give it some realizim.
