Liquify problems

When I use liquify, instead of showing the real time distortion it seems to put a square copy of about the same size as my brush of another portion of the layer. It's as if it is mirroring from the middle of the y-axis if that makes sense. It does distort but I have to hit invert (or other function buttons) to get it to show up and get the copied artifacts to dissapear. What is wrong here?
Photoshop 7.0 by the way. Really hard to edit when I can't see it!

hmmmmmm....no idea. Possibly the shift pixels tool is loaded on startup?? I haven't had any liquify problems....i don't even use liquify.
