Newbie regarding a wallpaper image

As you can tell by the title that i am a newbie to Photoshop and i am wanting to create a 800 x 600 walpaper image for my home computer.

My problem is that i have just watched the film AntiTrust and like some of the nurv graphics (do a google search and you will no what i maean) my problem is that when i try to recrate the image with my own text ie

C.M
CARTLEDGE MEDIA

it look like ****. The only thing that turns out the way i want it to is the image size. Could somebody please point me in the way of a tutorial or perhaps create a rough image for me to look at.
