I like to make patterns in photoshop and usually my only way of doing this is by making an image, then transforming it down 50% and left 50% (So it takes up 1/4th the image) then pasting the image to fill up the other 3 quadrants. After doing this I can see the seams that would normally be at the edge of my pattern, then I can edit them out. This gets more and more time consuming as my patterns get more complicated.

I was wondering if there is any way to change the brush tool so that if I draw over the edge of the canvas, the brush will automatically send those pixels to the opposide side. Sort of like in old NES games where you could run off the edge of a level and reappear on the other side of it. Or you could stand on the edge of the level and mario would be half on the left and half on the right. Does anyone know what im referring to?

oh also, Im curious if there is a way to run a filter in a similar way. So that the filter will respect the opposite edge when rendering an effect on the side of the canvas. So if you blur an image that is white on the left and black on the right, you'll get grey on the edges.

Try Filter---»Other---»Offset... Enter values that are 50% of entire image size; Check "Wrap around" for Undefined Areas..

No, there's no way to do this.

If you have Photoshop 7.0.1, Filter---»Pattern Maker... would solve your problems. And the Healing Brush works wonders removing those seams on organic textures.

I also rely heavily on XaosTools' Terrazzo plugin for generating reflections with more complicated geometry. Plus, it's just great fun to mess around with.

Ive tried the pattern maker and it gives me horrible continuity. I mean it makes patterns sure, but it makes patterns out of seams. And it utterly destroys detail. Heres an example of a pattern ive made using only offset, brush, and blending options:

I ran a selection of that through the pattern editor and after a few minutes I got a gobbledey gook version of it, with not a single "JON" discernable in the pattern. It looked more like a Magic Eye picture.

How come the makers of photoshop cant come up with this simple brush wrap effect? With all those crazy filters its amazing they cant wrap a canvas around automatically
