new user of photoshop here,

i have been given the thankless task of creating images from maps for my work who are resisiting hiring a graphics group. my question is this. Where can i find a decent plug in for photoshop 7.0 that does a good job of sharpening a poor image. many maps that i have inherited have not been scanned well and become usless if enlarged, stretched or morphed to different shapes. further to this i have also been looking for a good OCR that could read from an image in photoshop. Places like the centre of London, Paris and New York have so many streets that re-labelling clearly a map of the city centre would take the better part of my youth at the current rate.

It's really very difficult to un-blur an image. First of al, have you tried using the Sharpen filter? This can have surprisingly good results. The way i would do it is go out and either get it scanned well or get a new map and try again. Maybe you can find a map already on the net? I wouldn't bother touching it up becuase you might distort it even more and it would take "the better part of my youth". Sorry to say all that but there's no one way around this i'm afraid :(

do what cybling said... he is right, but its VERY hard (impossible basically)to just "make up data".... if you have the original maps... i would rescan them for better quality if not... what about using a digital version of a map of the same area... i'm sure you COULD find some of such citites as them ones you mentioned

Politely explain to the boss that his money would be better invested by buying a set of good, EPS-formatted maps on disk, as opposed to spending the money on your salary for the hours and hours you'll be putting in trying to polish turds.

Unless you like polishing turds. If that's the case, forget I mentioned the EPS map disks.
