Unsharp mask is your best friend. First set your radius (Resolution divided by 200). Then set your Threshold (Best set around 3-4). Now play with the amount till it looks right. This is the proper way to sharpen an image. Have your preview window set around white areas or something like the eyes, that will give you your best preview.

what do you mean resolution divided by 200? i'm not saying thats wrong, i'm just curious where you get that figure, or what its based on? because i am not very familiar with unsharp mask... and just so i'm completely clear... you mean if its resolution 72... you make the radius .36 right? 72/200.. like you said. anyway. |

Instead of using Unsharp Mask, there is another technique that produces similiar results but with less danger of artifacts or halos. Duplicate layer, then run a high pass filter on it (about 3 - 5) then change the layer blending mode to either hard light (will probably need to reduce opacity of layer to around 60%) or soft light (opacity can remain at 100%). The real benefit of this method is in its adjustability. |
