this Site and this Site use a similar technique to bevel the white objects. Can someone share the basics with me or maybe list a few sites that will help? thx

They just use a white to grey gradient, drop shadows, and some airbrushing.
Especially the first link, that is probably done by hand with a large Brush or the Airbrush tool by hand.
