I was hoping someone could help me with the technique to fade out part of an image. Say I have a jpeg, and I want to have the last third of the image naturally fade out, how do I do it? I don't want to use the gradient, I want to actually fade out the image. I hope I explained that correctly.

You can use the gradient, solid to transparent, and on a mask layer apply it.
