Help with Layerproblem - Pls

Hi folks!

I´ve got a problem with my photoshop,
when I make a new layer an type some text to it, the layer doesn´t change to a text layer it stays normal??

Can you tell me where to change this settings?

Photoshop makes a new layer all by itself when you click the type tool, click your image and start typing. You do not have to, first make a new layer.
