Mystery box

For some reason whenever I now scan an image or bring even an old one up into photoshop I am getting a little grey box in the upperleft hand corner and in it is a number 1 and some other symbol which I cannot make out. This does not happen when I bring the same images up in Paintshop or painter. I recently had to uninstall Zone Alarm and am wondering if this could have something to do with it or maybe it isn't even a PS problem but something on my computer. Has anyone else ever had this?:confused:

That is a slice you are seeing. Nothing to do with Zone Alarm.
View --> Show --> Slices and also check out Show Extras Options.
