Oh i hope someone is up this time of the morning.

I am trying to separate the foreground and background of an image as i want to blur the background.

I have tried a couple of methods of selection and then layer by cut command.

I have tried with feathering and without but i get a line around what i have cut out.

Can anyone give me a clue as to where i'm going wrong, i would be very grateful.

It's still early evening here. :]

Depending on the image, there are a few methods, one of which will give you the best result for your image.

Select the foreground and do Layer by Copy, then go to the background layer and do the blur. This way, you wouldn't have translucent pixels near the foreground area in which you cut out, instead, it should be a constant arrangement of opaque pixels.

OR

Select the foreground and inverse the selection (CTRL+SHIFT+I), then just run it through the blur filter.

OR

Manually blur the background using the blur tool.
