CTRL+Click the layer in which you want to apply the transparent fade to and press Q on your keyboard to enter Quick Mask mode. This will make parts of your image covered with a pink color. Don't worry about the pink because it won't affect your image at the moment. Now, using the gradient tool (set it to White to black), fill it with the gradient going from the place you want it to fade the most to the least. Then exit quick mask by pressing Q again and hit delete a few times, prefereable once or twice.

Thanks Mochan, I asked the same question two weeks ago and got another answer, anyway both are good. The other answer I got was to use the feather option. Gets the same effect.

masking is quicker than feather, and with masks you can always delete them and be left with the normal image, and when you feather it deletes the image
