How many web-safe fonts?

A client I'm doing a site for right now is having a hard time understanding that there are only so many fonts that can be used on a website for text. She doesn't like Arial, and wants something that draws more attention. But I don't want to go to a serif font either.

In any case, I really don't know the complete list of 'standard', web-safe fonts. Anyone able to help me out here? Maybe I will find something more to taste if I know what will show up.

Thx,

Dunno, but if she really wants something wack.. There is the possibility for external font thingie...with CSS.
Something like font-family:url("http://kkk.net/font.tff"); you know?

I'm sure that's supported by the newest browsers though...

Web-safe fonts? I suggest doing a fresh reinstall of Windows 98 and check the default fonts there.

Wouldn't fonts on the web depend on what fonts are installed on the viewer's computer?

Yeah. Older browsers would have issues with external fonts. About the only way to get a strange font online and have it be compatible for everybod is to put the font in as a graphic, or stick it into a flash piece.

Well, actually, it's not a crazy font that she wants, just something with a little more shape and characteristic. It has to be compatible with at least the last 3 versions of browsers. There's no way I would allow the use of a crazy font. ;)

Re-formatting and installing Windows is a big price to pay to find standard fonts. Maybe there's a different site that has them listed. Thanks anyway.

There is a way that you can enable session only fonts in IE4 and above, but as for websafe fonts, stick to fonts like verdana, arial, trebuchet, gerorgia etc..
