I have a chart I keep referring to every time I start designing a webpage; which recommends what to design the page to in order to fits different browser sizes. http://www.wpdfd.com/wpdtame.htm Now you think eventually the number would stick in my head... Well, I just came up with something I like better. I resized my screen to 800X600, 1024X768, etc and did a screen capture with IE maximized. I then dumped it into a PS file, removed the middle out of the image and duplicated the layer over the PS file I'm working on. Now I can just turn the IE layer on or off to see what the page will look like in various screen resolutions whenever I want. Browser Size |

That's a great idea, and it's also great to keep in mind how a site will look under different resolutions. The problem is, your 800x600 is not going to be like everyone elses. First, different browsers have different amounts of screen real estate you can design for. But say you don't care about Netscape or Mozilla or Opera or whatever that KDE browser is called, and only care about IE. Well, different versions of IE have different amounts of screen space available too. Also, different people have there broswers setup differently. Some use large icons, some don't. Some show certain toolbars, others don't, while sill others may have third party toolbars (such as Yahoo). Some display the status bar, some don't. Some use the default medium sized font setting, others use a custom setting. All these things mean that you simply cannot know how your page will look for all circumstances. And that's just for IE. If you do care about the others, there there are all kinds of other issues too. Which is why designing for liquid sizing is a pretty good idea many times (though certainly not all the time). Even so, having some sort of 'template' to guage how your site will look under different resolutions is a good idea. Just don't assume it's going to apply to everyone. |

Ha, I programmed my computer to resize the photoshop canvas window, when I say things like "eight hundred", or "athousandtwentyfour" into the microphone. It also makes me coff...*notices nobody is listening anymore..and shuts up.* ..Good idea, these small, simple yet effective stuff makes the world go around. :D |

If the 14" monitors that those people use can only support up to 8x6 res, isn't it also true that it most likely won't be able to support alot of colors? If so, the images will look crappy anyway. Looking at those statistics, I think it's safer to design for 8x6. /me loads up Pankshop 7.0 and yells at his mic to pour Paavo some beer. |

I didn't come along until UT... now UT2k3. Unfortunately, I don't have much time for any games anymore. At one time we were a top 10 clan on OGL, PG, and TP in UT.

Paavo: Lay off whatever you inhale or something. It makes even me dizzy. I don't know if I would want to make any program on my puter to listen to what I say. Especially NOT after a night out. :D

First of all - change the bg colour. It's not good @ all, if u want to learn others, when you yourself have to learn something. Quite funny, isn't it? Keep on, share your knowledge to the people.
