Hi people, this is my first post on this board. I'm working on an assignment and I was wondering if anyone knows how to make a cross-layer transaprency effect. By that I mean two seperate layers that gradually fade until they meet somewehere halfway inbetween. Kinda like a gradient, only with opacity. Hope I explained that well enough. Thanks for the info! "Gradient" means use the gradient fill tool. If you don't see it on your tool bar, click and hold your mouse over the paint bucket tool. You can then select the gradient tool and use it for a nice smooth transparency effect.

I know the gradient tool, but how do I use it after applying the layer mask? What actions do I take, step-by-step?

Use the gradient tool to "fill" the area of the layer mask you want to create the transition area in. Do you understand how to create a layer mask? By using the gradient tool, it will create the "transition" effect that makes one layer look like it fades into the next as the mask goes from black to white. |

Please be a bit more specific people. I used the Reveal All command but nothing changes visibly, and when I drag the gradient over the image, there still doesn't seem to be any difference.

You make the layer mask on the top layer. Seeing nothing change when you do "reveal all" is exactly what should happen. After doing that, you should be in mask edit mode. Your colors on your toolbar should turn black and white to mark the change. Then you can use the gradient fill tool. Drag the tool on the layer once in mask mode and you will notice the change. You can continue repeating this step as much as possible to get the desired transparency effect. |
