I have to duplicate a Logo that was created for a company. The files used to create the original are not available to me, but that's another story. Any since quite a bit of the logo is the actual name, is it better to use something like illustrator for the logo instead of photoshop. Photoshop seems to make pretty grainy text. Curves are not real smooth on letters. Thanks for any advice |

Logos are most usually done in Illustrator. The reason for this is that a vectorized logo can be blown up & shrunk to any size without losing clarity. A raster-based logo done in Photoshop would not fare as well. You "can" use photoshop for vector artwork. You can use the pen tool and shape tools to create vectors right in Photoshop. For many companies I work with, I have to re-create their logos because even they don't have good/vector versions. When that happens, I usually open the raster image I was given in Illustrator, trace over it with the pen tool, and then tweak it until it looks well defined. The same can be done in Photoshop as well. For logos with text, I attempt to the best of my ability to find a matching font and then adjust its leading/tracking/etc until it lines up with the original text. In both Illustrator and Photoshop you can convert text to outlines to preserve its vector appearance. |

Photoshop is fine if you export the text paths

Remember this... When you create a logo in Illustartor, nothing stop you form adding special effect in Photoshop over specific size... Also... if the logo is pretty simple (like a one color images) you can create a shape for the shpae tool in Photoshop... ans while your at it why not make a brush! |

I use CorelTrace at work all the time. It actually does a really good job of automatically tracing logos most of the time. Especially if you can scan the logo and get a good hi-res bitmap of it. Graphics taken off the web or something never work, but if you can scan it, CorelTrace or a similar program will save you a ton of time.
