I'm trying to make images smooth in Photoshop but my Anti-aliased button is greyed out so I can't check it. I just made a rectangle filled it, cut some stuff off the edges and then when I selected it and chose -> Modify -> Smooth -> '3' it changes but it's jagged. How can I make everything anti-aliased? What am I doing wrong?

I suppose your working with some other image mode than RGB. Go to Image -> Mode -> RGB. |

Nope, i'm in rgb mode, maybe I just didn't use enough smooth (3) ? I'm not sure why Anti-aliased is not selectable (check marked) though.

try setting the tools back to their defualt settings and then maybe you'll be able to turn it off.. and you have to turn it off before you edit ur img.. before you raztorize it, if your modifying it then you must have raztorized the img layer |

When I have the rectangular marquee tool selected the Anti-aliased box is not available (greyed out). When I choose the Elliptical marquee tool it is available and checked. The anti-alias is also checked when I use any of the lasso tools. What is the secret to making the smooth edges? I just smoothed something out but it still has slight jaggy edges, I've seen them much smoother than this. Here is an example... |

Try using the pen tool to create a path, load the path as a selection and then fill it

well obviously, the rectangular marquee doesn't have the anti-aliasing option because you will never encounter a scenario where the edges of the marquee isn't a horizontal or vertical line. no matter what you do, you will always have a sharp line everytime so Photoshop doesn't have to compensate for loss of incomplete pixels. |

You're right... forgive me i'm a newbie. I just can't seem to get the edges to be as smooth as seen in the example above, is that because I am working with only 1 colour as opposed to a gradient?

no, that's just the limitations of pixels :| if you're trying to make a curve that small, it's fairly difficult to get rid of the jagginess. |

Use the lasso, holding shift down makes the lines go straight / 45 degree angels. That way you should be able to use the smooth-thing with perfect antialiazing. Or am I missing the point, as usual? :p |
