Color change changes all. Help

When I do a color change in a figure in Photoshop, the background color which has the same color as the figure gets changed as well. Is there a way to remedy this situation?

Make a selection of only the element that you want to change the color of. There are many different ways to make selections. Read a few tutorials for ideas.
