New site, critique requested

Hey guys and gals,

I just developed a new site called MilitaryPals.com at http://www.militarypals.com.

It is a reunion site for the military. We just recently lauched, but this is the second iteration of the design. (first one was REALLY bad)

I'm more of a programmer, and not so much a designer, so any tips would be welcome. I kinda feel like it's pretty good, but also feel like it's missing something. I just can't figure out what may be missing.

it's plain as is but a good place to start, it works as a nice template for something mehbe a little more eyecandyish.

Any ideas for the eye candy?

What do you mean the backend looks good?

He said your back end looks good. lol! I think what he is refering to (my guess.) is the site 'functionality' is good. Backend usually refers to the code, esp scripting and server side/database stuff. Front end --> the look and feel and the html/css

think client - server (front-back)

I was more worried about him being able to actually see the backend. I don't think the backend is exposed in any way, but I wanted to make sure.

But really guys, how is the site? Colors look ok? Enough colors? I don't have any stock-type images or anything going on, is this ok?

Well other than that it looks pretty good :D
Everything is pretty big for my taste...but I guess that's just my taste...I mean the text font and the navigation text..

What resolution are you running? I always look at it on 1152x768 and always forget to check it on 800x600.

Would going smaller hurt the readability of the site for the general population?
