Hey, I've been wanting to get involved more in the newer game releases. However, I've been staying away from them considering many of the newer games require a better machine. Right now I got a Pentium 4, 1.6ghz, 512mb of Ram, GeForce 2mx 64mb graphics card. At this point, I don't care if the graphics are superb. All I want is my FPS be high and the choppiness low. So what would help my situation more? Upgrading my ram to 1 gig, or purchasing a 128mb or 256mb graphics card? Thanks in advance. |

Gfx Card. Try a Radeon 9600 or 9800pro if you have the money.

1.6ghz ouch, ur ram and graphics card seem fine to me, but i agree games are getting more demanding, i saw a game that needed a 64meg GC minimum, id say you cant go wrong with a nividia

Mikey, without wishing to fan the flames of gfx card superiority (Nvidia owner here) Radeon and ATI are where it's at. Unless you want a 2D card then you won't get better than Matrox, but I know that wasn't asked ;) |

Yeah, I have the GeForce 4 Ti4600 but I must agree that the new Radeon cards are kicking nVidia's butt.

maybe it was just the one i tried, didnt seem to wowo im happy with my nividia (no need for a flame anyway ) i have a Geforce 4 MX 440 , the the games that are most demanding (which i own) would be pirates of the caribbean (stunning graphics) and call of duty, are radeon cards more or (much as the case maybe) expensive? |

I think the new cards that nVidia put out recently are pretty dang amazing. Plus the driver support for Linux and BSD's is much better with nVidia. I wasn't too sure about the FX series at first, but I think they have improved it a lot since the first releases, so I am not sure whether ATI owns the video card market much anymore, imo. The only thing I don't like so much is the growing trend on video game makers to market their product for a specific card. For instance, Unreal 3 is in the making and some recent articles have shown they are shooting into the millions of polygons (versus 100K for a screen with Unreal2) and since nVidia and Unreal are like buddies now, they are pushing some new technology that nVidia is working on as one of the players in the Unreal series. So if you don't have a new nVidia card you wouldn't take full advantange of the new Unreal game. Bah - starts to remind me a bit of how M$ handles business. Severe your competition at the limbs. |
