Anyone here scan transparencies or negatives?

What do you use as far as hardware/software?

I need a link. Short on time, too.

I'm told it requires special software. I thought it required a high end flatbed scanner with a special lid. Why would the software need to be any different?

thanks a lot!

I don't know about any special software, but you will need a scanner with a transparency adapter if it is a flatbed scanner. Most scanning software already has settings for scanning transparency and negatives.

Meh..... Yeah, you can buy a transparency adapter for a flatbed, but at home, I just stick a piece of white paper behind the transparency and scan.

Clean-up, adjust curves, and adjust the levels and it should look fine.

Thanks guys!

torn - I gotta tell ya, that umax deal is junk (with Mac OS 9.2, at least.) We sent 2 of them back, then they gave us all kinds of slack on the phone, and we told them to stick it up their butt. (not really, but you get the idea)

mrbogus: I KNEW IT! I said that same thing this morning, and like 4 people told me I was nuts. I'm trying it tonight at home, so I can show them all how mighty and powerful I am!! :D :D

I appreciate your help fellas -

The only downside to scanning a transparency using a piece of white paper is that it will probably be darker than what a real transparency adapter would do (since a transparency adapter is basically an overhead light that moves in sync with the scanner head.

And photoshop can quite easily handle potentially darker scans and clean them up well.

I got the quote for outsourcing the transparency scans - $510 for 6 scans.

- no, I'm not kidding.

$65 for the scan, $25 to put it on a CD. Each.

Yeah, I'm not gonna do that. They can put their scanner up their butts. (Now, I'd pay $510 to see that!)
