Went to the store and picked up the startup kit for 66 bucks, includes Motorola cable modem, 3Com NIC.

No more 56k for the next year, cause I'm tied to a year contract.

Don't get the real version. Filled with spyware/adware. Light version is hacked.

But, make sure you have a virus scanner and it is good. There is a very bad benjamin.worm going around infecting kaza users...

I have ZoneAlarm on. So far 41 intrusions blocked since I got online.

Yeah zone alarm is very good and free.

As far as free Anitvirus software I don't know of any off hand. Norton is the king as far as I am concerned. I'd wait to download anything untill you have something up and running.

I think outpost is better then Zone Alarm. The free version doesn't look that good, not enough options. Outpost on the other hand got lots. Find here.

And i think Direct Connect is better then Kazaa.

I've used Kazaa at my uncle's place. The download speeds aren't that good though.

ZoneAlarm is quite popular, that's one of the main reasons I use it. Haven't heard of Outpost though. Also, how does BlackIce fair?
