No graphic designer should make more than $5.15 per hour, or more than $10,000 per year, whichever is lower. If you ever come to a point where you make more than that, you must immediately report to the IRS, who will assign you to a term of no less than 30 years at your local McDonalds being the fry-guy. Actually, most people probably wont' feel comfortable reporting their salaries, but besides that, if you're good enough, there is nothing holding you back from a very high salary. There is no certain plateau where it completely levels off. The average, I'd say if you're good, and NOT doing freelance, but working for an advertising agency in a big city (NOT IOWA), then I'd say you can EASILY make well over $100,000 per year. EASILY. But right now in the U.S., times are a bit tough and there is not a market for high-paid graphic designers at this time. |

Absolutely. Matt's right on the money (no pun intended) - I know several ad firms that pay their designers very well. 70K and up - but realistically, I live in Las Vegas (a designers dream - Advertising everywhere, growth everywhere, and constant cutthroat competition between casinos and other attractions) - and it's a real bitch getting graphics work - or any work - right now. Why? (rant warning) As it turns out, some a$$hole, coward M***F****s decided to blow up the world trade center in NYC and people don't want to travel much anymore. Thus, the Las Vegas tourist industry is down, income is down, and advertising is one of the things that gets cut, along with 4000 employees, from Casinos budgets... (end rant) Abhi - Depending on experience, equipment, and region, salary ranges from 30,000 USD on up. But one can always throw the fry guy thing in on the side and bump that up a bit. :D later- |

actually, for designers, particularly print, salaries often start somewhat lower than that, something in the 24k range for an entry-level designer isn't uncommon. the more you know and the more you can do (web, multimedia/flash, video) and the more experience you have the more you make. chris |
